  7.     That funny noise you hear in Washington is the sound of
  8. Republican mouths clamping shut after the selection of former
  9. drug czar William Bennett as chairman of the Republican National
  10. Committee. When Bennett's name was first floated, many
  11. Republican leaders howled privately about Bennett's late
  12. conversion to the party (he was a Democrat until 1986) and his
  13. dearth of political expertise. Once President Bush named his
  14. man, however, the bashers suddenly became boosters. One
  15. prominent, now silent opponent, according to White House
  16. sources: Republican pollster Robert Teeter, a close Bush
  17. adviser. Teeter denies any outcry. "It's not true," he says.
